Homemade Dishwasher Detergent Recipe: We have made the change to many different homemade cleaning products and figured it was high time we try out a homemade dishwasher detergent.
After looking around the internet it seemed almost all recipes were basically the same. We ended up going with a recipe on FromFaye.com.
2 c Borax
2 c Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
2 c Citric Acid or Lemi Shine (we used Lemi Shine)
1 c Kosher Salt
Directions: Mix all ingredient in a medium size bowl and leave out for a couple of days to dry. Be sure to stir often. Keep stored in an airtight container.
Use 1 tbsp per load.
We had read several complaints about the detergent getting clumpy and hard, so we left ours out on the kitchen counter and every time I walked through I gave it a good stir. After 2 days of doing this we haven’t had any problems with clumping.
After purchasing all these items we were questioning whether this was actually a money-saving tip. We compared the prices and amounts used, calculated that the price per batch is around $4.50. 80 loads per batch when you use 1 tbsp. which comes out to 6 cents per load. The cost for our regular brand Cascade Complete is $7.25 for 155 ounces which comes out to 13 cents per load when following the guidelines. That really is quite a savings for just a couple of minutes of work.
