Tips to Keep Guacamole Fresh

Good news! There is no need to toss out that left over guacamole and  you can make it ahead of time for when guests are coming over without worrying about that brown discoloring.

We have heard about many ways to keep guacamole fresh and green, so we decided to try a few different methods and see which works best.

Gaucamole fresh

Our first method is one we have heard many times and that is placing the avocado pit into the guacamole.

The second method is to spray the guacamole with cooking spray before placing the lid on the container.

The third method is to cover the guacamole with a thin layer of water before placing the lid on the container.

We made of 4 containers of guacamole and left one untouched and the others as described above. We put them in the refrigerator for about 3 hours.

Keeping Gaucamole Fresh

As you can see the water method by far had the best results. I took the lid off and poured the water out and the guacamole was as bright and green as when I put it in the refrigerator.

The cooking oil worked moderately well, but there was still some discoloration.

Placing the pit into the guacamole did not seem to make much difference at all, it is nearly as brown as the untouched container.

Do you have any great tips for helping keep food items fresh, send us a message  with your ideas.

Hair detangler

Using Fabric Softener to Tame Hard to Manage Hair

Before and after

Our friend Jenni sent the above photo to our Facebook page on how to detangle doll hair and asked if we could try this on her. We thought it was funny that she would compare her hair to a doll until I went over the following morning and saw her frizzy hair.

Frizzy hair

The above photo is the before fabric softener spray was applied. First I brushed it out and it was frizzy and dry looking. I sprayed her dry hair with the solution until it was wet all over. I then blew dry her hair and it looked like she had it professionally straightened.

Fabric Softener Hair

We didn’t really go by any directions because we were going off of the top doll photo. I looked into this process online and found that many people use fabric softener to tame their tresses.

Fabric softener can detangle your hard-to-manage hair, while leaving your hair conditioned and silky.

Instructions: Pour 3 cups of warm water into a clean spray bottle, Add 3 tbsp. liquid fabric softener. Replace the spray bottle’s cap and shake the bottle to combine the water and the fabric softener.

Get ready as you normally would, wash and condition your hair and then towel dry. Spray hair with the fabric softener spray solution, around 10 squirts for medium length hair. Comb hair with a wide-tooth comb and dry as usual.

We want to know if you have ever tried fabric softener on your hair and what the results were. Leave us a comment below.

Fresh Flowers

How to Make Fresh Cut Flowers Last Longer

We hope you had a lovely Mother’s Day! If you received flowers from your loved ones we have some DIY tips on how to make them last longer.

Moss River Hudson, WI

Pop: Don’t throw away those last drops of your pop! Pour about 1/4 cup into the water in a vase full of cut flowers. The sugar in the pop will make the blossoms last longer. If you have a clear vase and want the water to remain clear, use a clear soda, like Sprite or 7-Up.

Hair Spray: Just as it preserves your hairstyle, a spritz of hair spray can help your cut flowers look fresh longer. Stand a foot away from the bouquet and give them a quick spray, just on the undersides of the leaves and petals.

Aspirin: It’s a tried-and-true way to keep roses and other cut flowers fresh longer. Put a crushed aspirin in the water before adding your flowers. Also, don’t forget to change the vase water every few days.

Bleach: In addition to the food, adding a tiny amount of bleach to the water — 1/4 tsp. per quart of water — will also help keep the water clean and clear and prevent harmful microorganisms from taking over. But please don’t use too much or you’ll damage the flower you’re trying so hard to preserve!

Listerine: Add 2 ounces of the mouthwash to every gallon of water will act as plant food and create a bacteria-fighting environment for the flowers. It’s also acidic like many of the other solutions, which helps water move up cut stems.

Thank you to our favorite flower shop: Moss Rivers Flower Studio in Hudson, WI for providing us with the beautiful photos. Check Moss Rivers out on Facebook and show some love!

Bissell SpotBot Pet Carpet Cleaner Review

It’s time to say good riddance to the dirt and salt that has been left behind in your car from the long, hard winter.

Salt covered floor

Our floor mats were stained with salt and instead of bringing the car in for detailing we decided to tackle it ourselves with the Bissell SpotBot Pet carpet cleaner.

Bissell Spotbot

First we vacuumed the inside of our car to get rid of all the sand and dirt. We then removed our floor mats and went to work on steam cleaning them.  We know this product is geared towards pet cleanup, but we love to get the most out of each and every product we buy.

All you need to do it fill up the canister with water and cleaning solution and then you are ready to steam clean your mats and floor. It worked amazing. Look at the picture below, the car looks new.

Clean car

The Bissell SpotBot worked so good, we got a little cocky. Everyone has that one friend whose car is a disaster at all times – right? We called up ours and told her to bring her car over and we would clean it for her. We got more than we bargained for – the was a one time deal!

photo 3 (2)

As you can see in the picture she travels with her dog (we hope) – the hair was crazy! We did not use the SpotBot to pick up the hair, we unsuccessfully tried a vacuum and resorted to using a full roll of packing tape to get up the hair. Then we vacuumed and got out the SpotBot. It was like a new car after we steamed the floor.

Seriously, at this point I think it is safe to say that we could go into car detailing and make some good money. Instead we will move on to the next review.

We love our Bissell SpotBot and while it works great on cleaning up after our pets it also works fabulous on our car interior.

Cleaning cell phones

How To Rid Your Smartphone of Bacteria

Germs and bacteria are everywhere, but you can imagine how many are on your cellphone! We set out to find the best way to rid your cell phone of any and all germs.

First we took a look at UV Sanitizers for your smartphone:

Violight UV Cellphone Sanitizer

Violight UV Cellphone Sanitizer, 14-Ounce: Uses proven germicidal UV light to safely destroy 99.9% of surface bacteria on your phone.
Dual UV Bulbs Eliminates up to 99.9% of Germs Strep, E.Coli, Salmonella, Listeria, and Pseudomonas. This product is about the size of a hand soap dispenser, the device sets up unobtrusively on a nightstand or desk.

Here’s the thing, this sounds great but unless you are able to test for bacteria afterwards – how would one ever know if it works. There are many different brands, models and prices and they can be fairly inexpensive. The one above is $65.22 on Amazon, we did find them as low as $20.

Can you use cleaning solutions:

Do you dare use cleaning spray on your device? Sanitizing your iPhone can kill the spread of germs but Apple warns that using cleaning fluids on the iPhone can cause permanent damage to the screen’s coating, which could void your phone’s warranty.

Apple suggests the following steps:

Use only a soft, lint-free cloth. Abrasive cloths, towels, paper towels, and similar items may cause damage to the item.
Disconnect your Apple product from any external power sources.
Disconnect any external devices and other cabling from the product.
Keep liquids away from the product.
Don’t get moisture into any openings, and don’t use aerosol sprays, solvents, or abrasives.
Do not spray cleaners directly onto the item.

We have read several sites that say if you are using a bacterial spray on your phone or iPad that you should spray it on a soft cloths, just enough to make it damp and then to wipe down your phone.

Finding the perfect case to protect your devices:

Otterbox Defender Series

Our home uses Otterbox Defender Series. One would have to imagine with the enclosed case that most of the germs would stay on the case. Meaning that you can take the case off your phone and disinfect it without having to worry about wrecking your phone.

Tell us how you clean your cellphone and tablet in the comment section below.

Cleaning Stained Fingernails

Have you taken off your nail polish and your nails are still stained? Those stains are a total nightmare to get out – but whitening toothpaste can take care of that.

Fingernail cleaning

Simply scrub your nails with your favorite whitening toothpaste and leave on for ten minutes – your nails will be restored to their original whiteness in no time.

How To Make AAA Batteries Work As AA

This is the best tip we have seen in a long time! If you run out of AA batteries but have some AAAs laying around and some tinfoil you’re in luck.

Wrap up a ball of foil and stuff it into the case of your device where the battery’s positive terminal connects (we read you can do it both ways, but we only tried positive.) As long as you have enough foil to fill in the gap and make it tight, it should work.

This of course isn’t a permanent fix but should get you through until you can get to the store.

Sponge Hack

Microwave Kitchen Sponge Daily

Zap your Sponge

Germs are everywhere, but some places more than others. Your kitchen sponge is a breading ground for germs and you can fix that without having to get a new sponge daily.

Many researchers and scientists have reported that microwaving sponges (completely wet and never dry) for two minutes at high power killed or inactivated over 99 percent of the germs living in your sponge, including e coli.

A good rule of thumb is that after every time you use your sponge put it in the microwave (wet) for two minutes.

Microwave only sponges or plastic scrubbers that do not contain steel or other metals. When taking it out of the microwave be careful because it will be very hot.

Homemade Oven Cleaner Review

I am not a fan of self cleaning ovens and the toxic fumes of store bought oven cleaners. Over the weekend I made my own oven cleaner.

I TBLS dish soap (any kind)

1 1/2 cup baking soda

1/4 cup vinegar

2 TBLS water (enough to make a paste out of the above ingredients)

Put the dish soap in a bowl, add remaining ingredients, stir to paste. I used a pastry brush, you could also use an old paintbrush and coat the inside of oven with the paste. Be sure to take out racks.

Oven Cleaning

Let the paste sit for 6-8 hours or even overnight. I was only able to do 4 hours but I did notice results. You can see from the before and after photos that a good portion of the oven was completely clean.

There was no scrubbing involved, I simply wiped it down with a wet dish rag.

Oven 3

I wasn’t worried about cooking dinner for my family that evening because there wasn’t any toxic fumes afterwards.
