Keep Cookies Soft We've Tried It

How to Keep Homemade Cookies Soft

If a cookie is hard, I’m not interested. Soft, chewy cookies are the only way to go for me.

In order to keep your moist cookies soft and chewy, place one slice of white bread into the bottom of the container of your choice. I like to pick a container with a tight sealing lid. The cookies will absorb moisture from the bread, which keeps them soft longer. Why white bread? Because it won’t transfer its flavors to the cookies.

A tip that I have read says to replace the piece of bread every other day to keep the cookies soft. I have never replaced the bread, cookies don’t last for more than 3 to 4 days at my house and they always seem to stay soft.

Always remember that the suggested baking time is really only a recommendation and they should be watched closely. I always take my cookies out of the oven when they are still soft to the touch. Your cookies will continue to bake once you remove them from the oven.

Comment below if you have a great tip on how to keep your cookies soft.

How to Season a Cast Iron Skillet

How to Season a Cast Iron Skillet

How to Season a Cast Iron Skillet: I love my cast iron skillet as does my husband. One of us doesn’t care for it properly. I don’t want to point fingers but it’s not me. As you know with cast iron if you don’t take care of it, it can rust.

rusty cast iron

I noticed  our skillet was looking pretty rough and the food was sticking. When properly seasoned a cast iron skillet is smooth, shiny, and non-stick. Ours was none of these. You’ll know it’s time to re-season if food sticks to the surface or if the skillet appears dull or rusted.

Luckily re-seasoning a cast iron skillet is a simple process and assures you will continue to love cooking in it.

  • Preheat oven to 325°F.
  • If your skillet is new wash the skillet with warm, soapy water and a sponge or stiff brush. Cast iron should not normally be washed with soap, but it’s fine here since it’s about to be seasoned.
  • Rinse and thoroughly dry the skillet.
  • Using a cloth or paper towel, apply a thin coat of vegetable oil to the inside and outside of the skillet. Vegetable oil is the most recommended oil, but you can use any oil you choose.
  • Place the skillet upside down on the oven’s center rack.
  • Place a sheet of aluminum foil or pan below the rack to catch any drips.
  • Bake for an hour.
  • Turn off heat and allow to the skillet to cool completely before removing from oven.

I have found it works great to season my skillet after dinner, that way the skillet can cool down in the oven overnight.

Velata Raclette Tabletop Grill Review

photo 3 (2)

Grilling inside is a must during the long winter months in Wisconsin if you are anything like us and don’t enjoy shoveling the snow off your deck. Receiving the Velata Raclette Tabletop Grill from Velata consultant Rheda Wilson-Duff we were thrilled at the thought of a grilling alternative!

The Velata Raclette Tabletop Grill comes with a cast aluminum grill top, a granite stone top grill, 8 raclette dishes, 8 spatulas and a convenient carrying bag. The granite stone top can also be placed in the freezer and used to make cold stone ice cream, can’t wait to try that.

photo 2 (2)

The Raclette Grill package is priced at $140.00 which is quite a bargain for everything you get. Along with the grill, Rheda also sent us 4 of their spices, chocolate sauce & cheese sauce to try out.

For our first test we treated our families to a delicious steak and veggie dinner using the granite stone top that is included in the set. The second test came when we made breakfast using the aluminum grill top for french toast, sausage and hash browns. Both cook tops worked great and our meals were fabulous!

The set up was super easy and we were ready to cook in just a couple of minutes. The granite top heated up pretty quick and our steak bites and veggies were cooked to perfection. I was worried we were going to get smoked out of the house, but there was none.

For dessert we had strawberries and pretzels dipped in the delicious Belgium chocolate. Wow was that good. We recommend you keep an eye on the chocolate, we burnt our first batch.

The only thing that was not included that I would have liked to see is a recipe or meal idea book. Having some suggestions and cooking guidelines is always helpful. We found recipes here and on YouTube.

The Raclette Table Top Grill is going to make our winter’s a little more bearable knowing we can still have delicious grilled food from the warmth of our kitchen’s. This really seems like a great gift idea for those hard to shop for family members.

Velata’s description: “Create memorable meals or parties with the Velata Raclette Tabletop Grill. Borrowing a centuries-old Swiss tradition, the Velata Raclette is an easy-to-use appliance that allows you to cook delicious meals at the table.

The Velata Raclette Tabletop Grill includes 2 grill tops to give you the perfect surface to cook meats, fish, vegetables, or any grillable food. The 100% natural granite stone top triples as a pizza stone, a cold stone, and an elegant serving tray. And the non-stick cast aluminum grill top features a ridged grill on one side and a smooth griddle surface on the other.

While your meat or veggies cook on the grill, your cheese melts perfectly in the dish for a culinary match made in heaven! Share this fun, interactive experience with your loved ones and enjoy more engaging meals together. Bon appétit!”

You Can Purchase the Velata Here

Thanks again Rheda! We highly recommend the Racletta to everyone, this is for sure something we will use often.

Corn on the Cob Weve Tried It

Microwave Corn on the Cob Video

Corn on the Cob Weve Tried It

Microwave Corn on the Cob Video: I’m sure you have heard about microwaving corn on the cob by now. We have actually done this in the past and it works great!

Gone are the days of sitting outside on the front steps shucking a big bag of corn on the cob. It doesn’t get much easier: cook your corn on the cob in the microwave (4 minutes per ear of corn.) Immediately remove from microwave, cut the stem end off and shake the ear out of the husk. Watch our video and see how easy this is:

We also tried boiling the corn in the husk on the stove top to see if that would work too and it did! If you have a different way of cooking or shucking your corn on the cob comment below and let us know.

Chef Royal Salmon

One Minute Cooking Videos with Chef Royal: During our cooking lessons we asked our Facebook followers if they could ask a chef one question, what would it be.

1. How can I keep my chicken breasts juicy? Great question! This is an issue for us too. I can tell you after hearing the answer we have been doing it wrong all along.

2. How to get a good crust on a filet and other great steaks? Ever eat out and order a blue cheese crusted filet and wonder how you can do that at home? Chef Royal tells us…

Being a chef you would think that Royal would eat pretty much anything. One of our followers asked: What is one thing Royal will not eat. Take a guess before watching the video, we were shocked at the answer.

Weve Tried It has really enjoyed our cooking series with Chef Royal and guest DJ Phat. The amount of information we learned was huge, cooking the perfect ribeye, cooking on a Himalayan salt block, preparing exotic meats.

Hopefully we remember all of his tips and if not we can always go back and watch the videos as a reference. Other cooking videos: Perfect Ribeye and Salt Block Salmon by Chef Royal and Exotic Meats.

Clean garbage disposal

5 Ways to Clean Your Garbage Disposal

5 Ways to Clean Your Garbage Disposal: First things first, never put you hand down your garbage disposal. Your disposal should be cleaned bi-weekly and sooner if you detect an odor.

Ways to clean your garbage disposal

1.) Clean the grinder or blades with 2 cups of ice, 1 cup of rock salt or vinegar. Pour two cups of ice into the garbage disposal, followed by one-cup of salt or vinegar. Then, turn on cold water and let the disposal run for five to 10 seconds. The ice will clean off any debris off the blades, and the salt or vinegar will reduce any strong odors.

2.) Anytime you eat any kind of citrus fruit (lime, lemon, orange, grapefruit) save the peels,  a good way to freshen up your garbage disposal and leave your kitchen smelling great is to grind up a handful of citrus peels. The citric acid in the peels will not only clean the blades but it will also eliminate any odors.

3.) When putting food in your disposal add baking soda right on top, it is known for its odor absorbency.

4.) Mix 1 tablespoon bleach with 1 gallon of water. Pour in the disposal and let set for 10 minutes. Turn on the disposal and process thoroughly with cold water.

5.) Make lemon ice cubes. Slice up chunks of lemons and place them in an ice cube tray and fill with water, then freeze. Use a couple each time you want to clean your garbage disposal.

5.) Clean off any particles from the garbage disposal’s drainage system. It’s like unclogging a bathtub drain, plug the drain with a stopper, fill the entire sink with hot water and a few drips of dish detergent, and then let all the water drain with the disposal running at the same time. Gravity and the weight of water will rinse through the garbage disposal and clear out any debris in the pipe.

We want to know how you clean your garbage disposal and keep it smelling fresh. Let us know in the comment section below.

Easiest snack ever! We have been trying to watch our intake of junk food, but still want something sweet from time to time. These yogurt popsicles are the way to go.

Yogurt Popsicles

All you need is your favorite kind of yogurt and popsicle sticks. We cut a small opening in the middle of lid and placed the stick in. Popped it in the freezer and within a few hours we were enjoying the perfect healthy snack.

We chose Dannon Light & Fit because it is a great source of riboflavin, calcium, protein, phosphorus, and vitamin D. So it’s delicious and nutritious! Light nonfat yogurt and it’s only 80 calories!

This was very satisfying! Bring your kids along with you to the store and let them pick out their favorite flavors of yogurt, then they feel like they were a part of the process and it will taste that much better.

Tips to Keep Guacamole Fresh

Good news! There is no need to toss out that left over guacamole and  you can make it ahead of time for when guests are coming over without worrying about that brown discoloring.

We have heard about many ways to keep guacamole fresh and green, so we decided to try a few different methods and see which works best.

Gaucamole fresh

Our first method is one we have heard many times and that is placing the avocado pit into the guacamole.

The second method is to spray the guacamole with cooking spray before placing the lid on the container.

The third method is to cover the guacamole with a thin layer of water before placing the lid on the container.

We made of 4 containers of guacamole and left one untouched and the others as described above. We put them in the refrigerator for about 3 hours.

Keeping Gaucamole Fresh

As you can see the water method by far had the best results. I took the lid off and poured the water out and the guacamole was as bright and green as when I put it in the refrigerator.

The cooking oil worked moderately well, but there was still some discoloration.

Placing the pit into the guacamole did not seem to make much difference at all, it is nearly as brown as the untouched container.

Do you have any great tips for helping keep food items fresh, send us a message  with your ideas.

Sponge Hack

Microwave Kitchen Sponge Daily

Zap your Sponge

Germs are everywhere, but some places more than others. Your kitchen sponge is a breading ground for germs and you can fix that without having to get a new sponge daily.

Many researchers and scientists have reported that microwaving sponges (completely wet and never dry) for two minutes at high power killed or inactivated over 99 percent of the germs living in your sponge, including e coli.

A good rule of thumb is that after every time you use your sponge put it in the microwave (wet) for two minutes.

Microwave only sponges or plastic scrubbers that do not contain steel or other metals. When taking it out of the microwave be careful because it will be very hot.
