8 Simple Ways To Eat Healthy On a Budget

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Let’s talk boobs. There should be no shame in talking about mammograms and self checks. I went in for my mammogram, did you?

1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. It is important to know that only a small percentage of breast lumps turn out to be cancer, but they should NEVER be ignored. This disease is not just for women, each year over 2000 men are diagnosed with breast cancer.

Because of a self check I was aware that I had a few lumps in my breasts. I should note that I have had them in the past and they were just cysts and I had nothing to worry about. Losing a grandmother to breast cancer it definitely leaves a fear in the back of my mind: will I too get breast cancer?

At my recent visit I underwent a mammogram which turned up several lumps. I immediately was sent in for an ultrasound which showed many more lumps. Because I have had this before I knew what to look for on the ultra sound machine. I call them black holes. They were everywhere…I was panicked.

The doctor came in and gave me a few options, two of the lumps which she called masses, were larger than the others and suggested that we biopsy just one (the biggest one.) Although she didn’t feel that they were cancerous we still needed to be precautious.

I waited 3 days for the results, for the most part I wasn’t worried. Every now and then my mind would wonder – what if. My doctor called to tell me everything was good and they were just cysts.

For now I will go in every 6 months to be rechecked and have the lumps measured to make sure they don’t change shape or size.

Did you know that if breast cancer is detected early and is in the localized stage, the 5-year survival rate is 98%.

We encourage you to make an appointment today to get yourself a mammogram. If you don’t have insurance there are medical facilities across the country that provide free mammograms through the National Mammography Program. You can find a clinic near you here.

Here’s to good health!

Natural Ways To Fall Asleep

Ways to fall asleep

Natural Ways to Fall Asleep: Every morning while surfing through social media we read about many people who are having trouble sleeping. Let’s figure out a good alternative to getting some shut-eye without having to take prescription sleep aids.

This is key. Get your body on a set schedule and stick with it. Go to bed at the same time every night and get up at the same time every morning. This includes weekends. This may be the most important tip out of this post. The routine of a set schedule will keep your biological clock steady which will result in better rest.

Take a bath right before you go to bed. Soaking in a tub will relax your body and mind and will raise your body temperature. When you get out of the tub your body temp will drop and mimic the natural body temperature drop that triggers your brain to fall asleep. Personally I have always slept better if I take a bath or shower right before going bed.

Melatonin is a natural hormone that I use from time to time and it works great. Melatonin has been said to help people fall asleep faster and stay asleep without experiencing restlessness. It can also help with ending daytime fatigue. You only need a very small dose. Start out with 0.25 mg or 0.5 mg and adjust it up from there. Taking higher doses, such as 3 mg, can make you feel more awake, adjust your dose accordingly. You can always cut the pill in half.

Oils for sleep

Use Essential Oils: Certain scents, such as lavender, chamomile, and ylang-ylang, activate the alpha wave activity in the back of your brain, which in-turn leads to relaxation and can help you sleep more soundly. Mix a few drops of essential oil and water in a spray bottle and give your pillowcase a spritz. Or you can always get an aroma steaming pot. I have one and love it. That story here.

Cut out your caffeine intake after lunch. Caffeine has lasting power, five hours after your last cup of coffee or pop, half of its caffeine is still in your system. Of course that number could be higher depending on how strong you make your coffee.

Turn off all the lights. Light sends a signal to your brain to stay awake. The glow from your television, laptop, iPad, phone, or any other electronics devices  may pass through your closed eyelids and retinas and into the part of your brain that controls sleep. The darker your room is, the more soundly you will sleep. I put my phone on silent and turn it face down so that I can’t see it light up.

Make a list. Staying up worrying about everything you have to do the next day will undoubtedly make you stress. Make a list before you go to bed so that you can forget it until next day. You will be calmer knowing you won’t forget anything and most likely get better sleep.

Turn on a fan to keep cool. Keep it at the low setting. Your body loses some ability to regulate its temperature during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Over-chilling your environment down to 60°F, could backfire.

Wear light pajamas that won’t tangle up in your sleep. There is nothing worse than waking up because you are uncomfortable in what you are wearing.

The Healing Powers of Epsom Salt Review

Dr Teals Epsom Salt

The Healing Powers of Epsom Salt Review: We have heard about using this product on ailments but had never tried it until now.

Last week while training for the NYC Marathon, I was having some ankle pain (the kind where you think you may need to see a doctor.) Over the counter medications weren’t easing the pain, so she decided that it would be best to take a week off of training and let it heal up.

Remembering that I had Epsom Salts that I had used for some cleaning projects, I decided to try soaking my ankle. I will be honest, I wasn’t overly confident that it was going to do anything but by now you know that I will try anything once, so I did.

To my amazement by the time I was done with the first soak the majority of the pain was gone. Seriously! I did another soak before bed and was completely pain free after. I had assumed that the pain would return by morning…nothing. I am still going to give my ankle a rest, but the pain is gone.

Epsom salt is not actually salt but a naturally occurring pure mineral compound of magnesium and sulfate. Long known as a natural remedy for a number of ailments, Epsom salt has numerous health benefits.

Some of the countless health benefits include relaxing the nervous system, soothing back pain and aching limbs, easing muscle strain, healing cuts, treating cold and congestion, and drawing toxins from the body. One of the simplest ways to get the benefits is to soak in a tub full of hot water with a few cups of Epsom Salt. An Epsom salt bath can help ease pain and relieve inflammation, making it beneficial in the treatment of sore muscles, bronchial asthma and migraine headaches.

Based on how well this worked on my sore ankle, we will definitely be using Epsom Salt more often. Have you had any great results with Epsom Salt? Comment below we would love to share.

Black Soap

Dr. Woods Black Soap Review

Dr. Woods Black Soap Review

Dr. Woods Soap Review: If you or someone you know has eczema and can’t seem to get it under control, read on…

We encourage our friends and followers to let us know about products they are using and their satisfaction of how it worked. Our good friend Jenifer had nothing but high praise for Dr. Woods Black Soap.

A little background on Dr. Woods Black Soap also known as Anago Soap or Alata Soap, originates from West Africa. It’s methods and secrets have been passed down from generation to generation to keep the soap close to mother nature and avoid exploitation and imitations.

It is used to help relieve acne, oily skin, clear blemishes and various other skin issues. It can also be used for bathing and washing hair, removing make-up, works against premature facial lines. Dr. Woods should be used by anyone who wishes to improve the quality of their skin.

Jenifer’s Review:

“I have a touch of eczema on the back of my neck. My doctor gave me cream for it a couple years ago. One Google search showed an FDA warning about the cream containing a known cancer causing chemical (Thanks Doc! genius.)

She also wrote out a prescription for meds. Before having it filled I decided to give my “magic” Dr. Woods Black Soap a try. I’ve used this stuff for years in the shower and decided to really scrub the area with it twice a day. It cleared it up within days. As long as I use it in shower it keeps the eczema away.

While on the road I haven’t been able to find the pure form of this Black Soap and the rash has gotten out of control. I kept trying other soaps. Nothing worked. Finally I found the soap here in Sacramento. The rash that I’ve had for a couple of months cleared up within 4 days. This soap is great for everything……skin, hair, clothes, whatever.”

You can purchase Dr. Woods Black Soap here. Let us know if it worked for you in the comment section below.

Juicing For Beginners Tips and Recipes

Juicing Weve Tried It

We decided to jump on the juicing bandwagon or at least give it a try. We tested out two different Breville Juice Fountains and made a vegetable and a fruit drink recipe.

Disclaimer before you watch the video: The first juicer used was borrowed from a friend of ours who uses it religiously and loves it. The blades were dull and it took longer than we wanted so we sped up the video a little to move the process along.

We checked out Dr. Oz’s website and he had some important things everyone should know about before juicing: Only make as much juice as you intend to consume at one time, juice that isn’t consumed right away can harbor bacteria and cause food poisoning and threaten the nutritional value of the juice.

Be sure to wash your fruits and vegetables before juicing. If your fruits have pits be sure to remove before you juice.

If you are juicing as a way to diet and lose weight, make sure you consume at least 2000 calories or more per day depending on your metabolic needs. Don’t starve yourself! It’s important that your body gets a sufficient amount of calories, vitamins, nutrients, protein, fat and carbohydrates.

Remember that you need fiber, to keep your digestive system working smoothly. You can add dissolvable fiber powder to your juices or supplement with prunes or pears.

The health benefits of drinking freshly juiced fruit and vegetables are that they retain most of of the vitamins, minerals and plant chemicals. They help protect against cardiovascular disease, cancer and various inflammatory diseases, like rheumatoid arthritis.

Fruit Recipe: 1 green apple, 2 grapefruit and 2 peaches. Half the peaches and remove the pits, peel the grapefruit and if the apple is too big, cut in half.

Vegetable Recipe: 3 tomatoes, 3 carrots, 1 bunch of parsley and one large cucumber. All these can be put in whole with the peels.

Let us know in the comments below what your favorite juicing recipe is.

Sunburn relief

At Home Sunburn Relief Remedies

Sunburn remedies Weve Tried It

At Home Sunburn Relief Remedies: Did you spend a little to much time out in the sun yesterday and now have a nasty sunburn? Here are some great home remedies for easing the pain with items you probably already have.

After doing a good amount of research, we found that these are the most common natural remedies.

Vinegar: Vinegar is a great way to treat sunburn,it is most effective after a cool or tepid shower.

You will need:
-1 cup apple cider vinegar
-a spray bottle (optional)
-Cotton balls

Take a water only shower if possible. Fill a spray bottle with pure unfiltered apple cider vinegar, and spray it onto your burn, or soak cotton balls and apply. Let it dry.

Milk: A cool milk compress is one of the quickest, simplest and low-cost ways to treat sunburn. The cool temperature of the milk with help ease the heat, while the milk creates a layer of protein to help your skin heal.

You will need:
-Soft Cloth
-Chilled milk

Pour a bowl of milk high enough so that you can thoroughly soak your soft cloth in it. When the cloth is saturated, let the excess liquid drain off. Drape across your burn, pressing gently so that it stays in place, and leave it on for as long as needed. If the milk in the bowl becomes room temperature chill it before re-dunking your compress.

Cucumber: Cucumbers can provide instant relief to sunburned skin. Not only is a cool cucumber soothing to the burn simply because its cool, but its antioxidant and analgesic properties promote healing and further relief from discomfort. You can either apply cucumber slices directly to the skin or make a cucumber paste and apply to the skin.

Baking Soda: Adding a few heaping tablespoons of baking soda to cool bath water makes a sunburn-soothing remedy. Just keep your soaking time down to 15 to 20 minutes.

Oatmeal: Oatmeal added to cool bathwater offers another wonderful relief for sunburned skin. Fill up the bathtub with cool water-scoop 1/2 to 1 cup oatmeal — an ideal skin soother — and mix it in

Potato: A potato makes a great pain reliever. Take two washed potatoes, cut them into small chunks, and place them in a blender or food processor. Blend or process until the potatoes are in liquid form. Add water if they look dry. Pat the burned areas with the pulverized potatoes. Wait until the potatoes dry, then take a cool shower.

Water: The sun not only burned your skin, but dehydrated it. Be sure to replenish liquids by drinking plenty of water while recovering from a sunburn.

Pain relievers: Nonprescription pain relievers such as aspirin and ibuprofen can relieve pain and cut the inflammation of a sunburn.

Home Remedies for Mosquito Bite Itch Relief

Home remedies for mosquito bite itch relief – There is nothing worse than being covered in bug bites and you can’t stop the itching.

We did a little digging and came up with a list of all natural itch relief aids and our guess is that you may have most of these items in your home already!

We personally have not tried each of these remedies out, but hey it’s worth a shot. They are in no particular order so be sure to read them all.

First things first! Right when you realize that you have been bitten clean the bite area with rubbing alcohol, alcohol wipes, or plain water.

1. Honey – Use raw honey and just put a small amount on the bite to take the itch away.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar is recommended; dilute two or three cups in a bathtub of warm water to treat all-over bites, or put a few drops on cotton and wiping an individual bite.

3. Tea Tree Oil acts as an anti-inflammatory so it combats itching, swelling and pain.

4. Ice – Apply a cold ice pack to the bite. Ice numbs the nerves that conduct itching and pain so you don’t feel either.

5. Aloe Vera is very good for itching and swelling and can be very soothing.

6. 9 Volt Battery – For spider, bee, wasp, and ant bites, take a 9-voltbattery, and wet the bitten area a little bit. Put battery to the bitten area, and it will stop the action of poison and stop the hurt.

7. Preparation H it takes care of swelling and itching.

8. X Marks the Spot – Putting an X in the middle of the bite with your fingernails. This causes some pain which in-turn distracts you from the itch.

9. Apply a blend of essential oils of eucalyptus, winter green and peppermint or tea tree oil to bites every 2 to 3 hours to relieve itching and aid healing.

10. Tea bags: Natural tannins in tea act as an astringent, drawing toxins out of the skin and helping to lessen your discomfort. Press a used tea bag against your bites until the itching has subsided.

11. Toothpaste – Just a dab of toothpaste can help relieve itching of bites. It has anti-inflammatory properties, and ingredients like baking soda and menthol help to relieve the irritation.

12. Deodorant – Rub some underarm deodorant on the bite area.Try to use a non-scented deodorant if possible.

Virtuwell Online Clinic Service Review

Virtuwell.com – This has got to be one of my favorite medical services available for WI and MN residents. Virtuwell is an online service that is available 24/7 and staffed by nurse practitioners.

The online clinic treats a large variety of conditions; bladder infections, pink eye, ear infections, bronchitis and even influenza. As well as more uncommon things like Lyme’s disease, skin problems and many other conditions.

The process is simple! Log on and create an account. Run through a series of questions related to your condition. Upon completion a np will look over your symptoms and come up with a treatment plan for you. Your plan can be either emailed or texted to you. If a prescription is needed it will be sent to a pharmacy of your choice.

The fee for this service is $45.00 or less depending on your insurance co-pay. If it is determined that they are unable to treat your symptoms, you don’t pay anything.

I have used this service and was very impressed with the whole process. I felt horrible and knew exactly what was wrong. I had no desire to leave the house, much less go see a doctor. Once I completed my questions online the nurse practitioner called me within 5 minutes.

The staff was very knowledgeable and thorough with their questions. It was determined that I did need a prescription which she sent right to my pharmacy. She also let me know if I had any questions or new symptoms I could just log back into my account and someone would give me a call to discuss them.

A couple of days later the Nurse Practitioner called me to see how I was doing and if I had any more questions or concerns.

Another benefit is that they can send your prescriptions anywhere you are. So, if you are on vacation and someone becomes sick you can simply log on for diagnosis instead of trying to find a local clinic.

Virtuwell guarantees their service. The guarantee is pretty simple, if you are not satisfied for any reason with your experience they will return you money. Can’t beat that!

Do you have a great online service you just love? Comment below we would love to hear about it.

ZQuiet Snoring Device Review

Does someone in your house have a snoring problem? Snoring is a problem that can affect everyone in the house. There are many health issues that snoring can cause.

People who snore wake up frequently during the night and they may not enter into REM for the recommended amount of time.  Low oxygen levels in their blood can be an issue, as well as experiencing daytime sleepiness and fatigue.

Relationships can suffer due to their partner having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep due to the snoring. My husband is one of these people. He suffered from all of the above symptoms and it was effecting his quality of life, struggling to make it through the day without falling asleep and difficulty concentrating.

I decided to take a chance and order him the ZQuiet mouth piece. I figured it was worth the $70.00 to see if it would work for him. I ordered the product online at zquiet.com and received it in a couple of days.

The product is a thin soft plastic mouth piece, needing nothing more than a quick wash with soap and water before the first use. I was happy that there was no boiling and molding needed. Within a couple of minutes he was ready to try it out.

Since falling asleep comes very quickly to him I was astonished to notice immediately that he was not snoring at all and did not snore at all during the night. The first couple of mornings he had some minor jaw pain, but that is due to the device holding the jaw forward during the night. After a couple of nights he no longer had the pain.

The ZQuiet definitely exceeded my expectations on how well the product worked. My only regret is that I did not order the second ZQuiet at the discounted rate during my initial purchase, because the dog ate it. I will definitely be getting another one ordered real soon.

Do you have a great product that has made a difference in your quality of life, let us know we would love to hear from you.
