Social Sites Outage

Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp are Down

If you have tried to refresh your Facebook, Instagram or WhatsApp you may have noticed nothing is happening. Now what? What will you do on this early Sunday morning? If you are a Twitter user it is very clear that the problem is world wide.

The Verge is reporting that the outages happened around 6:30AM ET this morning. Just a month ago the social media sites encountered their biggest outage lasting several hours blaming “server configuration change.” I would like to believe that this wouldn’t bother me, but it does.

We want to know what your go-to social media site is? We are big fans of Instagram. Maybe we are biased but our foodie Phatphood has a pretty amazing Instagram page that will surely leave you hungry.

How long will Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp be down? Good question! Until then why don’t you look around We’ve Tried It and find a great recipe to make for dinner.

Candy Bouquet 350

DIY Candy Bouquet

Candy Bouquet

DIY Candy Bouquet: Are you looking for an easy craft that looks impressive? Then this DIY candy bouquet is something you should try. It makes a great gift for any occasion and is perfect for anyone with a sweet tooth.

It is not difficult to make and can work for just about any budget. We purchased all of our supplies at our local Walmart. We ended up only using half of the candy (bonus for us!), so the entire bouquet came in at under $10.00

DIY candy bouquet

Supplies Needed:
Jar, Vase or cup
Candy sticks
Ribbon
Glass beads (helps stabilize)
Grass or gift wrap crinkle
Ribbon
Tape
Small message balloon
Candy

Directions:
Line the jar with different candy bars then place glass beads in the jar to stabilize the candy. Tape your different kinds of candy to the candy sticks and arrange just the way you like. Wrap your jar with ribbon and secure.

In just a few minutes you have your candy masterpiece! I would advise that you over purchase on the candy like I did, that way you can snack and create at the same time. I am much more creative when I am eating chocolate!

White House Black Market Sale

White House Black Market 1

White House Black Market Sale: Today we had such a great time shopping (playing dress-up) at White House Black Market in Woodbury, MN. The best part was our salesperson Jen, she was so much fun!

WHBM

We were invited over to the ‘Friends & Family’ sale: 25% off your entire purchase (use code 14091) – You can shop in boutiques and online today Tuesday, Nov. 11 – Sunday, Nov. 16. This sale is on top of the other sales they have going on, so it really is quite a big savings.

WHBM Shirley

Shirley is what I would call conservative when it comes to clothes and walking into WHBM was a bit overwhelming to her. Jen immediately started putting outfits together for her and filling a dressing room. What a blast it was to watch Shirley try on things she would never dream of wearing. AND, she even bought a cute outfit!

If you have any holiday parties coming up be sure to stop in or go to their website before the 16th and take advantage of the 25% off.

Thanks again to Jen at WHBM Woodbury Lakes boutique for taking such good care of us, we will be back soon!

ICE Standard with Smart911 In Case of Emergency App

ICE standard app

Ice Standard with Smart911 could save your life. This free application places all of your emergency health information on the lock screen of your iPhone, giving emergency personal your medical and contact info even when your cell is in lock mode.

We downloaded this application after speaking with an emergency professional regarding what they look for when they arrive at the scene of an emergency. Many people have an ICE contact in their phone, but because most people have their phone locked the emergency responders have no access to phone contacts.

With this application you can choose which of the following information to show up as wallpaper on your lock screen:
Emergency Contacts #’s
Gender
Birth Date
Blood Type
Health Conditions
Medications
Allergies
Insurance Info
Other information

911 app

ICE Standard has partnered with Smart911 so you can register your cell phone number.  When you call 911 from your cell phone, emergency responders can see your ICE information in Smart911 enabled communities.

When an emergency situation occurs the more information the EMT’s have the better chance they have at saving your life or the life of your loved one. This information also allows them to quickly have the number of your emergency contact.

You can download this application on itunes. If you have an Android phone there are similar apps available at play.google.com for a small fee.

Do you have an app on your phone that you think we should give a try? Leave us a comment below.

President-Obama

The White House ‘It’s On Us’ Campaign Launch

President Obama

The White House ‘It’s On Us’ Campaign Launch: I received a call last Thursday saying that I would be attending the It’s On Us campaign launch at the White House in less than 24 hours with Danni Starr from HOT 99.5 The Kane Show. Excited is an understatement.

President Barack Obama joined Vice President Biden to launch the “It’s On Us” initiative. An awareness campaign designed to help put an end to sexual assault on college campuses.

The campaign asks men and women across America to take a pledge to step off the sidelines and be part of the solution to campus sexual assault.

President Obama stated: “An estimated one in five women has been sexually assaulted during her college years. Of those assaults, only 12 percent are reported, and of those reported assaults, only a fraction of the offenders are punished.”

The Obama administration has taken steps to help bring an end to campus sexual assault by:

  • Sending guidance to every school district, college, and university that receives federal funding on their legal obligations to prevent and respond to sexual assault.
  • Creating the White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault to work with colleges and universities on developing best practices on how to respond and prevent sexual assault.
  • Reviewing existing laws to make sure they adequately protect victims of sexual assault.

Watch President Obama and Vice President Biden address It’s On Us:

We encourage you to not only take the pledge, but to also spread the word. Share these important links with any and all college students, upcoming college students and parents that you know. Campus sexual assault does not only affect women – it happens to men too.

I took the pledge – please take the pledge here —-> ItsOnUs.org

The video below are photos that I took of my day at The White House:

Fall Lawn Maintenance Tips

461404

Fall Lawn Maintenance Tips: Fall lawn care is essential to having a healthy lawn come spring. We have put together a list of tips you should do before the snow falls.

Remove leaves: Regularly rake or mow your leaves. It is very important to remove the leaves from your lawn. Don’t wait until your trees are bare. If you do, the leaves will saturate and form an impenetrable mat that if left unmoved will suffocate the grass and breed fungal diseases.

If you have a large yard we would recommend using a lawnmower fitted with a bag or vacuum system. It doesn’t matter which method you use, just be sure to remove the leaves before they get soggy.

Mowing: Your mower should be set to 2 inches in the fall. Your lawn will be growing more slowly now and you only want to be taking off 1 inch of grass when mowing.

De-Thatch: Check for thatch by removing a plug of grass and soil. One-half inch of thatch or less is not a problem. If there is more than that, your lawn is ready for a thatch-management. Vigorously rake out the dead grass from your lawn with a spring-tined rake, or rent a motorized scarifier for larger lawns. This will improve the look and health of your grass.

Aerate: Aeration fights grass compaction from summers high volume traffic and will promote uptake of oxygen and nutrients. Aeration reduces thatch, improves drainage, and loosens soil. Aerate the soil by pushing a border fork into the soil, or use a hollow tiner, which pulls out plugs of soil at 4-inch intervals. This should be done every 2 years.

Fertilize: Cool-season grasses, such as bluegrass, fescue, and ryegrass, respond well to feeding in early September and again in late fall (late October or November). A fall application of fertilizer gives your lawn the essential nutrients for the grass to grow deep roots now and to keep nutrients on reserve for a healthy start next spring.

Overseed: Fall is a great time to overseed your yard. Power seeding your lawn will increase your turf density. Overall it will improve the appearance and health of your yard. The best natural way to fight against insect and weed damage is a dense lawn.

Tips

Attack weeds: Fall is the best time to rid your yard of weeds, such as dandelions, clover, and other broadleaf weeds. Weeds, like most plants, are in the energy absorbing mode during the fall. They drink in everything that comes their way, including weed killers. Apply an herbicide now so that the weeds won’t return in the spring.

Most herbicide manufacturers recommend applying the weed killer during early-to-mid fall, when daytime temperatures are consistently above 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

Drain irrigation lines: Completely drain your lawn’s irrigation system before freezing weather arrives.

Prepare lawn mower for storage: If you prepare your lawn mower correctly in the fall it will be ready to go come next spring. Be sure to use up all the gas in the mower as part of your winterizing plan. The easiest way to do this is to simply run the engine dry in late fall. Change the air filter on your lawn mower at the end of the season. Empty the oil tank and refill after cleaning up your mower and sharpening the blades. Be sure to dispose of the old oil properly. Beneath the mower, clean the underside of the carriage as well as the blades. Use a hose to power wash off any dried mud and grass clippings. Some additional scraping may be necessary, especially on the underside.

*When it comes time to aerate or dethatch or seed your lawn check out your local rental center. We use All Season’s Rental in Western Wisconsin, they have everything we need to keep our yard looking amazing without having spend big bucks on items we only use once a year.

Crabby Girl Weve Tried It 3

Crabby Girl Photo Caption Contest: Most people are familiar with Grumpy Cat. With a slight twist, we would like to offer up the concept of ‘Crabby Girl’ for your consideration.

Crabby Girl is my cousin and this sad, sad photo was taken 8 years ago when she was 5. Why so out of sorts? Crabby Girl’s mom was showing off her dance moves during Crabby Girl’s kindergarten Valentine’s Day dance. Suffice it to say, if you had witnessed her over-the-top parental antics, you’d have cried too.

Rules:

Your caption must be added to the bottom of the photo in the designated area. The ‘Weve Tried It’ identifier must remain on the picture. Keep it clean or it will be eliminated. If you don’t already have a photo editing app on your phone there are many free ones available for download. If you are adding texting from you computer you can use picmonkey.com for free.

All entries must be added to our Facebook contest status post. That link is here. Whoever has the most likes on their photo at the end of the specified period wins – so feel free to lobby all of your friends to cast their votes. In the event of a tie, we will conduct a vote-off between those photos.
