Eyebrow Sugaring Review

Sugaring Shirley

Eyebrow Sugaring Review: Thanks to Theresa L. Larson of Avante Salon in Stillwater, Mn for teaching us all about the art of eyebrow sugaring.

Theresa has been a licensed cosmetologist since 1992, licensed manager since 1994, certified sugar practitioner since 2004 and an educator for “Sugar it” since 2005. A current cosmetology license or Esthetician license is required to obtain body sugaring certification.

Sugaring is an ancient hair removal method that removes the hair from the root. It can remove hair as short as 1/16”, so there is no need to wait for hair to grow out between treatments.

Sugaring is made from all natural ingredients and the product is only used on one client, so there is no contamination concerns from warming pots. There are no strips used during the process, the sugar is applied directly to the skin and removed by the professional using only their hands.

I would say the sugaring process feels pretty close to the waxing process for eyebrows. The advantage I found is the sugaring compound does not cling to the skin as much as warm wax, so there is less redness and irritation when done. I have pretty sensitive skin and usually have some redness and irritation after waxing, with the sugaring I had no redness or irritation after.

Theresa did a great job explaining to me what she was doing as well as giving me a great shape to my brows.

Homemade Peanut Butter Recipe Video

How to Make Homemade Peanut Butter

Homemade Peanut Butter Recipe Video: We recently had the opportunity to try some homemade peanut butter made by a friend. Amazed by the fresh, creamy deliciousness, we knew we had to make our own.

There are many recipes on the internet for peanut butter, some call for oil, butter and salt. We decided to use store bought roasted salted peanuts. There was no need to add anything except the peanuts. The oil and salt used in the roasting process is enough to give the peanut butter a creamy texture and great flavor.

Using our Kitchenaid food processor we simply poured in the desired amount of peanuts and turned the machine on. Starting with the chop setting and moving up to the puree setting.

The peanuts will go through a couple of stages. First they will turn into a powder, then they will get firm and be almost a peanut ball. Continuing to process the oils, it begins to release and you get the creamy peanut butter. It took us about 3 minutes of processing to achieve the desired consistency.

In just a few minutes time you get delicious peanut butter and the satisfaction of making it yourself! You can purchase the Kitchenaid Food Chopper here for $39.99.

Do you have a favorite recipe you make in your food processor? Comment below, we love trying new things.

Back to school tips

Back to School Tips for Parents

School Supplies

Back to School Tips for Parents: In just a little over a month we will be sending our children back to school. It’s never to soon to start preparing.

Back to school shopping can be a big hit to your finances if you have not planned properly. The average family will spend $669.28 on clothes, shoes, supplies and electronics. This is an increase of almost 5% from last year.

If you take the time and do some planning, you might be able to save your family some time and money.

Here are some tips for getting organized:

Make a list: Check your schools website for their supply lists. Have you child try on their clothes and shoes from last year to see what is actually needed.

Shop at home first: You might be surprised what is left over from last year. Look in your drawers, cabinets and closets to find items from last year that can be used this year. Pencil boxes, calculators, rulers and boxes of pencils and pens all can usually be used for a couple of years.

Create a budget: Be clear with the family what you are able to spend, then figure out what is most needed and purchase those items first.

Check Ads: Check both online and print ads for special buys. Some retailers are even posting special ads on their social media pages.

Pillsbury Grands Biscuit Doughnut Recipe Review

Best 10 minute doughnuts

Pillsbury Grands Biscuit Doughnut Recipe Review: We hit a home run with this recipe from Pillsbury for Grands Spring Doughnuts. You can make these tasty doughnuts at home in just minutes.

We can’t go on enough about how quick and easy it was to make these delicious doughnuts. If you like mini doughnuts that you can buy at the carnival, then you will love these. The total process didn’t take more than 10 minutes.

Doughnut making

Step 1
In deep fryer or 2-quart heavy saucepan, heat oil over medium heat to 350°F. One package of Pillsbury Grands Biscuits. Separate dough into 8 biscuits. Using small round cookie cutter or in our case a metal shot glass, cut hole in center of each biscuit.

Step 2
Gently place up to 4 biscuits in hot oil. Fry on one side until golden brown (less than a minute.) Gently turn with tongs or chop stick; fry until other side is golden brown. Be sure to fry up the biscuit holes too.  Place on cooling rack; cool 3 to 5 minutes.

Glaze Recipe (prepare before frying doughnuts)

1 cup powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
2 tablespoons milk
In small bowl, mix powdered sugar, milk and vanilla until thick glaze forms.

Transfer glaze into flat bowl for dipping

Cinnamon Sugar Recipe (prepare before frying donuts)
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon

Mix sugar and cinnamon together in flat bowl for dipping. Dip the warm doughnuts into either mixture or both and serve. Our favorites were the ones that we dipped in both the glaze and cinnamon and sugar mix.

Easy Doughnuts

We suggest doubling this recipe because they are that good. Our batch was gone in about 2 minutes and everyone was raving at how good they were.

Homemade Dishwasher Detergent Recipe

Homemade Dishwashing Detergent

Homemade Dishwasher Detergent Recipe: We have made the change to many different homemade cleaning products and figured it was high time we try out a homemade dishwasher detergent.

After looking around the internet it seemed almost all recipes were basically the same. We ended up going with a recipe on FromFaye.com.

2 c Borax
2 c Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
2 c Citric Acid or Lemi Shine (we used Lemi Shine)
1 c Kosher Salt

Directions: Mix all ingredient in a medium size bowl and leave out for a couple of days to dry. Be sure to stir often. Keep stored in an airtight container.

Dishwashing Detergent

Use 1 tbsp per load.

We had read several complaints about the detergent getting clumpy and hard, so we left ours out on the kitchen counter and every time I walked through I gave it a good stir. After 2 days of doing this we haven’t had any problems with clumping.

After purchasing all these items we were questioning whether this was actually a money-saving tip. We compared the prices and amounts used, calculated that the price per batch is around $4.50. 80 loads per batch when you use 1 tbsp. which comes out to 6 cents per load. The cost for our regular brand Cascade Complete is $7.25 for 155 ounces which comes out to 13 cents per load when following the guidelines. That really is quite a savings for just a couple of minutes of work.

Foaming hand soap

How to Make Foaming Hand Soap

DIY Foaming Soap

How to Make Foaming Hand Soap: Want to save a bunch of money on hand soap? This is so easy and as long as you are making yourself some you might as well make a bottle for a friend too.

If you were to buy foaming hand soap in the store it would run you anywhere from $2.50 – $3.50 per bottle. Never throw away empty foaming bottles, save them and make your own.

Simply pour 2 tbs of regular hand soap into your foaming hand soap container and fill the rest with water. Shake gently and it is ready to use.

Foaming Soap

I tried this about a month ago and was worried that the mixture would separate while sitting, but it didn’t.  My DIY foaming soap has worked great every time.

My Earth Friendly hand soap was $3.49 for 17 oz. I will be able to make 8 bottles of foaming hand soap from this one bottle. That is a savings of between $17.00-$20.00 just using the one bottle of hand soap.

You can also add a few drops of essential oils to your soap to add a pleasant fragrance. Don’t want a plastic bottle sitting next to your beautiful sink? Go for a fancier look and purchase a reusable foaming bottle.

Do you have any great money saving tips? Comment below we would love to hear from you.

DIY iron on

How to Make Iron On Sandpaper Art T-Shirt

Sandpaper T Shirt Iron On

How to Make Iron On Sandpaper Art T-Shirt: Summer vacation can get a bit long when you’re at home with kids. I’m always searching for easy craft projects to keep my daughter busy and came upon sandpaper iron-on’s. I decided to give it a try on my own before we try it together.

Supplies needed: 1 piece of sandpaper (maybe keep a few extra around in-case you make a mistake), a t-shirt, crayons, wax paper and an iron. Lucky for me I was able to find my iron hidden in the back of the laundry area looking brand new!

Sandpaper art

Have your kids color a picture on the sandpaper. Keep in mind that the picture will be reversed so, if they are doing letters they need to be written backwards. (I just wrote the letters and turned over the paper for reference.)

Make sure to color the picture heavy on the paper to get a lot of wax on the sandpaper. Then put a piece of wax paper inside the shirt to avoid bleeding of the image onto the back of the shirt as well.

Iron on decal

Place the sandpaper artwork face down onto front of shirt. Lay a sheet of wax or parchment paper on top of sandpaper. Iron the back of sandpaper for a good 30 seconds or so to melt the crayon wax and allow it to release onto the shirt.

Place the shirt in the dryer for about 20 minutes, this will help the wax to set into the shirt.

WTI Shirt

To my surprise the transfer worked very well. You can definitely tell that the original drawing was done with crayon, but I like how that really shows off the original drawing. This is a great way to keep a souvenir of your children’s artistic abilities.

Do you have some fun projects that you have done with your kids this summer? Comment below and let us know, we are always looking for ideas.

homemade ice cream

2 Ingredient Ice Cream Bread Video

Ice Cream Bread Weve Tried It

2 Ingredient Ice Cream Bread Video: Over the weekend I was searching the web while craving something sweet. I should add that I was limited on what I could make because I also needed to go grocery shopping.  In my mind anything with ice cream is good, so when I came across 2 Ingredient Ice Cream Bread I had to try it.

Ingredients: Self rising flower and the ice cream of your choice, what could be easier? I used Blue Bunny Double Strawberry Ice Cream for my bread.

2 cups of Ice Cream- softened (any flavor)
1 1/2 cups of self rising flour.

I put the 2 cups of ice cream in the microwave for around 30 seconds to soften. Then added the flour and ice cream together in a medium mixing bowl. Stir until they are fully mixed together.

Put into a greased bread pan. Flatten with spoon
Bake for 45 minutes at 350 degrees.

After 45 minutes I was quite surprised to see a nice loaf of bread fully cooked in the oven. The recipe worked!

I had expected the bread to be a bit sweeter having used the ice cream, and it was a little heavy but other than that it was pretty good.

To keep with the ice cream theme, I served it up warm with a scoop of Blue Bunny Vanilla Ice Cream and that added the sweetness I was looking for.

Raspberry Jam

Raspberry Freezer Jam Recipe and Video

Raspberry Freezer Jam

Raspberry Freezer Jam Recipe and Video: It’s raspberry season and we are fortunate to have friends with raspberry bushes. Our Facebook followers suggested that we make jam and since we have never done that before we thought we would give it a whirl.

Deciding on raspberry freezer jam, we searched the web for the perfect recipe and they were all pretty much the same and all seemed simple. From start to finish it took about 30 minutes.

3 cups prepared fruit (about 6 cups red raspberries)
5 cups sugar, measured into separate bowl
3/4 cup water
1 box SURE-JELL Fruit Pectin

Crush raspberries thoroughly, one layer at a time (we used a potato masher.) Measure exactly 3 cups crushed raspberries into large bowl. Stir in sugar. Let stand 10 min., stirring occasionally.

Mix water and pectin in large saucepan. Bring to boil on high heat, stirring constantly. Continue boiling and stirring 1 min. Then add the fruit mixture; stir 3 min.or until sugar is almost dissolved and no longer grainy.

Fill your containers immediately to within 1/2 inch of top. Clean the top edges of the containers and then immediately cover with lids. Let stand at room temperature 24 hours. Jam is now ready to use. You can store in refrigerator up to 3 weeks or freeze extra containers for up to 1 year. Thaw in refrigerator before using.

We will be making this again with blueberries! If you have a different way of making freezer jam be sure to comment below.

Wilderness Hotel and Golf Resort Review

The Wilderness Hotel and Resort

Wilderness Hotel and Golf Resort Review: If you are looking for a getaway that is fun for all ages, Wisconsin Dells is the place to go. After surveying our Facebook friends on the best place to stay in WD the majority said the Wilderness.

We booked a 3 bedroom frontier condo and had more than enough room for two families (7 people.) The bedrooms were all very spacious. It has a fully equipped kitchen, washer and dryer, screened in porch and all the comforts of your own home.

The property consists of 600+ acres, the Wilderness Resort located in Wisconsin Dells is home to three amazing waterpark resorts: Wilderness Hotel & Golf Resort, Wilderness on the Lake and Glacier Canyon Lodge. Together, these properties make up America’s largest waterpark resort, offering 4 indoor and 4 outdoor waterparks totaling more than 500,000 square feet all reserved exclusively for Wilderness Resort guests. There is always something more to explore at the Wilderness.

water slides

Checking-In: The check in process was seamless. They had multiple windows available, so even though we arrived right at check-in time there was no wait. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable about the facility and went over all the amenities of the resort on the maps as well as directions to our condo. The check in packet includes coupons for many of the local eateries as well as a free coupon book.

Because the property is so big there are just too many outdoor and indoor waterparks to mention. What we can say is that each and every day you can visit a different one on the property. Most of the amenities including the waterparks are exclusively for hotel guests, so they are not nearly as crowded as many of the other resorts and you don’t have to wait in line for very long.

Indoor Waterparks: The indoor waterparks are great for families of all ages. They have activities for the littlest to biggest. The children’s areas are very well designed with small slides for the little ones all the way up to big curly slides for the bigger kids. The lifeguard staff was very focused and attentive. They not only have staff in the water areas, but also patrolling the outer areas. They are very courteous and willing to help when they see someone with an injury or in our case an unexpected bloody nose.
