Finger Crocheting

Easy Finger Crochet Infinity Scarf Video

Finger Crocheting

Easy Finger Crochet Infinity Scarf Video: For some reason my brain shuts down when I put a crochet hook in my hand, I just can’t seem to figure out how to crochet the conventional way.

I was able to figure out the arm crocheting that I have been checking out on YouTube. After completing a few arm crochet scarves, I was wondering if I could do the same thing using my fingers and get a tighter crochet. Well the answer is yes! I could and I was even more excited when I realized I could easily fit the 12 stitches needed for the scarf width on my fingers.

The great part about this project is all you need is yarn and your fingers. Using 5 or 6 oz yarn gives the scarf a great look. The skeins of yarn that have 106 yards make for a perfect size infinity scarf. I kept a pencil handy to use in case I need to take a break, just slide your loops onto the pencil and you can set it down and start up again when you are ready.

It might take a little practice using just your fingers, but just be patient and you will be amazed at how easy it really is. If you need to start, stop, pause – do it! Don’t give up!

When you complete your finger crochet share a picture of your project with us on our Facebook page, we would love to see it.

Gel Perfect Review Weve Tried It

Nutra Nail Gel Perfect 5 Minute Nail Color Review

Gel Perfect Review Weve Tried It

Nutra Nail Gel Perfect 5 Minute Nail Color Review: 5 minutes and go, that’s what caught my eye while shopping for some new nail polish. With everything to do around the house I never seem to have time to do my nails and let them dry.

Generally one of 2 things seems to happen, either I end up with smudged nails or I don’t do my nails at all. To be honest the second is usually the case. 5 minutes to dry nails I could do, so I purchased the orchid color.

The package comes with a very small bottle of color, a bottle of activator and a bottle of brush cleaner. I paid 9.98 for the kit which seems a little pricey for such a small amount of polish.

The instructions are pretty clear and simple. Apply the activator to one hand sealing the edges, then immediately apply the color and repeat on the second hand. Next apply another coat of activator, another coat of color then a top coat of activator and repeat on second hand. Applying 5 coats onto my nails took a little longer than I expected, but was not at all difficult.

Day 1

5 minutes later my nails were rock hard dry! I was so happy to have found a quick nail kit. I woke up the next morning to extreme disappointment, almost all of my nails were chipped.

Day 2

Day 3 was even worse, on some nails over half of the polish had completely chipped off. While this product did dry as quickly as promised the polish did not last for even 24 hours. This is definitely not a product that I could recommend.

Day 3

Bacon Burger Macaroni and Cheese

Bacon Burger Macaroni and Cheese Recipe

Bacon Burger Macaroni and Cheese

We love homemade macaroni and cheese and recently we tried this bacon burger macaroni and cheese at a friends house and thought it was the best recipe we have ever tasted. We were hungry but seriously it will blow you away.

The original recipe was called Macaroni & Cheese 101 and found on Marthastewart.com. This recipe is taken up a couple of notches with bacon, hamburger and pretzels.

8 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 cups crushed Pretzels
5 1/2 cups milk
1/2 cup flour
2 teaspoons salt
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
4 1/2 cups graded sharp white cheddar cheese
2 cups grated Gruyere
24 ounces elbow macaroni
1 pound ground beef
1 pound bacon

Fry up the 1lb of bacon and 1lb of hamburger and set aside. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Butter a large baking dish and set aside.

Bacon buger

In a small bowl crush 2 cups of pretzels. In a small pan over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter and then pour over your pretzels. Set aside.

Bring a large pot of water to a boil and cook the macaroni until the outside of pasta is done and the inside is underdone. 2-3 minutes.

Warm up the 5 1/2 cups of milk in a pan. In a deep fraying pan melt the rest of the butter. When the butter starts to bubble add the 1/2 cup of flour. Cook and stir for one minute.

While stirring the butter and flour add in the hot milk a small amount at a time and continue mixing until smooth. Whisk constantly until the sauce bubbles and thickens. This will take 8 to 12 minutes.

Remove the pan from the heat and add in the salt, nutmeg, peppers, 3 cups of cheddar and 1 1/2 cups of Gruyere, bacon, hamburger and macaroni. Stir thoroughly.

Pour the macaroni and cheese into the large baking dish. Sprinkle with the remaining cheddar, Gruyere cheeses and the crushed pretzels. Bake until golden, about 30 minutes.

Let sit for 5 minutes and then it is ready to serve. We hope you enjoy this recipe.

Shirley Marathon

My TCS NYC Marathon Experience

Shirley Erdman NYC Marathon

AMAZING is the first word that comes to mind when I am asked about my TCS NYC Marathon experience. From start to finish, it truly was an awesome experience.

Starting months ago, after completing the registration process, the New York Road Runners began sending information on training, traveling and suggestions for getting the most out of the entire process. I spent countless hours reading the tips and Q&A info.  The advance preparation materials were just what I needed to get ready for the race.

Not long after arriving in New York, it was on to the Expo experience. I was prepared to wait in line for hours to get my race day packet but the entire process took 5 minutes and then I moved on to pick up my shirt — the perfect souvenir.  There were so many amazing items to purchase that I could have spent hours just taking it all in.

Race day was awesome. The thousands of workers and volunteers went above and beyond to make sure that all participants got the red carpet treatment. It felt as if every person I came in contact with was there just for me. They looked me right in the eyes with every interaction and offered up some great encouragement: “good job,” “you look great,” “keep up the good work.”  Despite standing for hours in the extremely cold and windy conditions, these awesome volunteers seemed unaffected as they supported us and cheered us on.

The fans along the route truly made the TCS NY Marathon a premier event. For the entire 26.2 mile journey there were bands playing music, precious words of encouragement were offered.  There were lots of cheers, high fives and smiles to keep our spirits high.

Seeing the finish line was exhilarating. The announcer welcomed me with, “Smile for the camera, you just completed the TCS NY Marathon!” Hearing those words nearly brought me to tears.  I had really done it and I was proud. Then one of those amazing volunteers placed a finisher’s medal around my neck and looked me in the eyes while offering up a heartfelt ,”Congratulations, you did it!”

As I continued moving along, I was given a finisher’s wrap and told to keep walking toward the food and drinks.  A volunteer soon placed a warm poncho around my shoulders, pulling up the hood and making sure it were properly closed. Once again it was the feeling that I was the only person who mattered at that moment.

Shirley NYC

My race was complete!

Jordan and Missy were waiting anxiously for me at the security check point and both were surprised when I announced that I felt great. My first request was a McDonald’s cheeseburger because I was hungry!  Then I remember stating emphatically, “Wow that was fun!” Quite simply put, I had the time of my life.

I ran the TCS NY Marathon to raise funds for Joint Council On International Services, an adoption advocacy group. While I raised funds for their Change For Children Campaign, I got more from this experience than any amount of money donated. I am grateful and proud that I was a part of Team Joint Council 2014.

Lemon Loaf Cake Recipe

Lemon Loaf Cake Recipe

Lemon Loaf Cake Recipe: I love just about anything lemon! Lemon bars, lemon cake, lemonade, lemon skittles and even just straight lemons! My favorite is the lemon loaf cake from Starbucks and was hoping to recreate that.

There are so many recipes out there for different kinds of lemon cakes, but until now I wasn’t getting the full lemon flavor that I was looking for. Combining a couple recipes I came up with the perfect one for flavor, but not as dense as Starbucks.

My initial plan was to make extra and share with some friends, so I made both a loaf and cupcakes. Truth be told the cupcakes were done first and we ate most of them before the loaf was even finished baking. There will be no sharing.

Batter Ingredients:
1 box yellow cake mix
2.9 oz box cook & serve lemon pudding
1/2 cup vegetable oil
4 large eggs
1/2 cup milk
8 ounces sour cream
6 tablespoons lemon juice

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray 2 loaf pans (9×5) or cupcake pans with cooking spray.

Combine all cake ingredients into mixing bowl. Mix for 1 1/2 minutes. Pour batter into prepared loaf or cupcake pans. For loaf pans bake for about 50 minutes. For cupcake pans bake for about 15 minutes until golden brown and cooked through. Remove from oven and let cool for about 10 minutes before removing from pans. Let cool completely before frosting.

Icing Ingredients:
2 cups powders sugar
4 tablespoons lemon juice
1 tablespoon water

Combine powdered sugar, lemon juice and water (if needed) in medium bowl. Drizzle icing over completely cooled loaves or cupcakes and enjoy.

Both the loaves and cupcakes turned out light and fluffy and were a great treat for my family.
