Vehicle Maintenance Tips

Vehicle Maintenance Tips: Properly maintaining your vehicle is key to keeping it running longer and reducing the chances of costly repairs in the future.

By doing regular maintenance, your mechanic should be able to spot minor problems easily. Here are the basics:

Oil Changes: Oil changes are recommended every 5,000 miles if you use conventional oil, or every 10,000 miles if you use synthetic oil. During your oil changes be sure to have your air filter and windshield wipers inspected as well. Wipers should be changed at least once a year.

Replacing Tires: Use the penny trick to check for wear on tires. Put the penny in upside down in the tire tread, if you can see the top of Lincoln’s head on the penny, then the tire is worn out. If you can see all of Lincoln’s hair, then the tire is completely worn out. Also look at the side walls of your tires for cracking. If you see cracks in the side walls, then it’s time to replace the tires.

Tire Rotation: To keep tires rotated properly it is recommended that you rotate your tires every six months or 6,000 miles. Rotating tires will give you longer wear on your tires saving you money.

Brake Inspections: Have your brakes inspected every time you get your tires rotated. Disc brakes usually include a part called a wear indicator. When the wear indicator grinds against the rotor, it makes a squealing noise as you apply the brakes. This noise is a signal which tells you it’s time to have your brakes replaced.

Tire Pressure: Check the air pressure in your tires once a month. Tire pressure can change due to various conditions. The pressure can change due to weather conditions, heavy driving or lack of driving. Be sure to have your tire inflated to the correct pressure for the weather. There are different PSI recommendations for cold weather and warm weather.

Lawn mower

Lawn Mower Maintenance Tips

Lawn Mower Tips

Lawn Mower Maintenance Tips: Few pieces of lawn equipment take a beating like a lawn mower.  Yet, this important piece of equipment is often neglected until it won’t start or something breaks.

A lack of preventive maintenance almost guarantees an early death for your lawn mower, but you don’t have to be a mechanic to keep it buzzing all summer long.

Check the oil: Monitor the oil level in your mower and look for floating debris or oil that is dark black in color. Old or contaminated oil should be drained and replaced. To change the oil, remove the drain plug underneath the mower and allow it to drain completely. Be sure to consult your owner’s manual for the correct type of oil to use.

Clean out the undercarriage: Grass can get caked in the undercarriage potentially clogging the mower’s discharge chute. Use a wire brush to scrape grass clippings and dirt from the undercarriage and spray the remaining debris away with a hose.

Inspect the air filter:  A clogged or dirty air filter puts added stress on the mower and burns gas less efficiently. Most lawn mowers have a paper or foam air filter that can be easily accessed.

Change the spark plug: Like the air filter, the spark plug is extremely important to a functioning lawn mower, yet inexpensive and easy to replace. Change the spark plug every year to ensure an easy start.

Have the mower blades sharpened: Mower blades endure a great deal of stress thanks to rocks, large branches and other hidden objects. A dull blade rips and tears grass instead of providing a clean cut.

Easy Tile Grout Cleaning

Easy Tile Grout Cleaning: We have found a great alternative use for Resolve High Traffic Carpet Cleaner, it can also be used to clean the grout on your tile floors!

With the direct stream dispensing it is very easy to spray directly into the grout lines you want clean.

Simply spray the cleaner onto the area you are wanting to clean and leave it sit for about 15-20 minutes.

We used two methods to wipe off the Resolve Carpet Cleaner and they both worked good. In one area we simply wiped off with a wash cloth and in the other area we scrubbed the grout lightly with a tooth brush. Both methods got the grout back to the original color.

All of the grout in my home is a darker color, so it is hard to see the dramatic difference in them from the pictures, but it really is amazing! I had no idea that the bathroom grout was actually maroon!

We can’t wait to finish all the hard areas in the house!

Do you know of a product that works wonders in a way that it is not advertised? We would love to here about it in the comment section below.

Baking soda

No Poo Shampoo Review

Baking soda

No Poo Shampoo Review: So I decided to stop using shampoo and jump on this “no poo shampoo” train that I have been hearing about. In theory it made sense to me, that commercially made hair washes strip your hair and scalp of their natural oils which makes your scalp freak out and produce more and more which makes you rely more heavily on soaps to clean it.

Still. I have very fine, oily hair. Generally two days without shampoo and my hair is an oily mess. Could I really go without using shampoo?

No-poo is taking shampoo and conditioner out of the picture entirely, and substituting baking soda and vinegar. The baking soda acts as the cleaning agent in the hair washing process. You only use enough to cleanse your hair, so you don’t need to worry about it frying (seems to be the biggest hesitation when it comes to the no-poo method). The vinegar acts as the conditioning agent, and can leave your hair feeling soft, shiny, and overall…CLEAN.

I’m loving being shampoo free. My hair and scalp love it too, it is soft, full and shiny. I have had many comments on how healthy it looks.

Directions: Place the baking soda in a airtight container in your shower. Each time you need to wash your hair place about a tablespoon of soda in the palm of your (wet) hand. The water on your hand will help form a paste. Get this paste on your fingertips and massage in the roots of your hair. If your hair is especially thick, add more baking soda. Keep in until your hair starts to feel slippery and the baking soda has mostly dissolved.

Then condition with the vinegar rinse. I keep a spray bottle of vinegar in the shower, spray on your hair then rinse out. I have not noticed any vinegar smell afterwards and I love the way my hair looks and feels.

I have been using this method on my daughter hair as well and now there is no worries about getting soap in her eyes, this really is a no-tears way of cleaning.

Have you tried the “no poo” method and what do you think? Leave us a comment below.

Makeup remover

DIY Eye Makeup Remover Video

DIY eye makeup remover video. Are you sick of all the strong chemicals in your makeup remover or even the smell? We are, so we set out to make our own makeup remover and think we found the perfect recipe.

This process was quick and easy. Coconut oil, vitamin E oil and small glass jars.

Fill the glass container with coconut oil and then put in microwave for 5-10 seconds until it turns to liquid. Then add 1/4 teaspoon of vitamin e oil to the coconut oil and stir (we used a toothpick.)

Once completely mixed, put the lid on and store in a cool place until it turns to a solid. You don’t have to refrigerate this product.

Apply a small amount to a makeup remover pad and gently wipe the eye. Be sure to keep your eyes fully closed while applying the makeup remover.

Coconut oil would work alone but we added vitamin E because of all the benefits to our skin.

Benefits of using vitamin E oil: aids in keeping your skin looking young and soft. The skin under and your eye doesn’t produce as much of the natural oil that is necessary to keep the skin firm and vibrant. Applying vitamin E under your eyes helps prevent puffiness because it will constrict blood vessels, which will keep fluids from building up.

It can also help prevent dark circles from forming under your eyes. Don’t rub the skin under your eyes. Under eye skin is fragile and rubbing it can cause bags and wrinkles. Instead, lightly tap the skin to penetrate that area with vitamin E.

We were thrilled with the results and will continue to use this product! If you have made your own makeup remover please tell us about it in the comment section below.

Frozen fresh fruit popsicles

Hamilton Beach 10 Minute FastPop Ice Pop Maker Review: The Hamilton Beach 68770 Ice Pop maker is a fantastic product with many great benefits. Weve Tried It and will definitely use this over and over again.

Gone are the days of going to grab a popsicle from the freezer only to realize they need to be tossed out because they are covered with ice crystals and are slimy.

What interested us the most is that we could make 100% real juice popsicles in 10 minutes. Today we had some fun and decided to get all fancy, adding fresh cut up strawberries, blueberries and kiwi and used Welches Sparkling Red Grape Juice.

Hamilton Beach FastPop

We cut the fruit into smaller pieces and loaded them into the machine and then poured in our juice.

So how does it work? Keep you FastPop Ice Maker in the freezer all the time, and when you are ready for a treat take it out and pour in your preferred juice, put the handles in and that’s it. You don’t even put back in the freezer, just leave it on the counter and it goes to work.

Popsicle maker

You can make up to six popsicles before the base needs to go back in the freezer.

The ice pop maker machine includes the fast pop maker base, six dishwasher-safe sticks and a removal tool. You can use your own ingredients and easily prepare healthy treats in the comfort of your home with the Hamilton Beach Fast Ice Pop maker. This seems like a win!

mildew remover

How to Remove Mold and Mildew from Shower

How to remove mold and mildew from shower. Over time black mold can build up on bathroom caulk and it can be hard to remove. Not only is it a health hazard, it looks terrible.

Moldy shower

If you’ve tried cleaning this stuff, you know it’s nearly impossible. Over the past years I have tried many different way to clean it and nothing has worked. My next step was going to be to remove all of the moldy caulking and re-caulk my shower to get it looking clean again.  I did a little more online research and found a cleaning method that worked amazingly well with no scrubbing required.

Bathroom mold remover

All you need is some liquid bleach and some cotton pads. I soaked the cotton pads in the bleach and pushed them into the moldy caulk area. I placed the cotton over the moldy area and let them soak overnight and in the morning my caulk was white again.

I am absolutely thrilled with the results. My shower looks new again or like I re-caulked it. I will for sure be using the bleach and cotton ball method again. Quick and easy!

Waffle Maker

Crescent Roll Waffle Pizza Pockets Recipe

Waffle Pizza Pockets

Crescent roll waffle pizza pockets is what we made for lunch today! We decided to go out on a limb and try them in the waffle iron. To our surprise, they were great.

Crescent rolls
Green Pepper diced
Mozzarella Cheese
Marinara/Pizza Sauce for dipping

Heat up your waffle iron. Keep your crescent rolls in squares, you can make 2 pockets per canister. On bottom half put on your desired ingredients. We used pepperoni, green peppers and mozzarella cheese. Put another crescent square on top and seal all the edges so that the cheese doesn’t melt out.

Check them around the 3 minute mark just to be sure they weren’t burning and left them to cook for one more minute. Times may vary.

We heated up some marinara sauce for dipping.  The pockets seemed to stay sealed nicely, so you may want to add pizza sauce right in the middle of the pocket.

This recipe seems like it would be great to get your kids involved with cooking. Let them make their own pizzas!

Next time we are going to try; Canadian bacon and pineapple with mozzarella cheese. What do you think would be good ingredients to add?

Shirt crafts

DIY Sharpie Tie Dye T-Shirt

DIY Sharpie Tie Dye T-Shirt: I just remembered that my daughter needs an “artistic” t-shirt for school tomorrow and she doesn’t have one. Lucky for me I recently saw an article on how to make a tie dye t-shirt!

All you need is a plain t-shirt, some colored Sharpie markers, a bottle of rubbing alcohol and a dropper.

Tie Dye Shirt

I first placed a plastic bag on the inside of the shirt so we could make both sides different without it leaking through. For our pattern we made circular dots in different colors all over the shirt.

Tie Dye shirt instructions

Then fill the dropper with alcohol and begin dropping in the dots. The color “magically” bursts away from the dots. You can do any design you want!

This whole process took about 10 minutes to complete and since my 7 year old daughter helped, she is very excited to wear her shirt with pride tomorrow.

Tie Dye kids shirt

To set the color just soak the shirt in a mixture of vinegar and water before washing.

These would be great in patriotic colors for a 4th of July celebration or for that matter just a fun project for a rainy day.

Do you have any great projects to do with kids? We would love to hear about them.
