Sweet potatoes are one of my favorite things about Thanksgiving. I am always in charge of bringing them to our family gathering. This year I decided to make up a new recipe and they taste like a dessert.
6 large sweet potatoes
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 cup light brown sugar
Salt and pepper
3 tablespoons butter (soft)
1/4 cup milk
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cook sweet potatoes until done (soft to the touch.) It took a little over an hour for mine to cook.
In a large mixing bowl put the pealed sweet potatoes (I break mine up a bit with a fork), add the rest of the ingredients and whip on high speed until all lumps are gone and they are smooth.
Finish off with a few chucks of butter on top and crushed candied walnuts (that recipe here) and they are ready to serve.
There is always one dish at every party that gets talked about, this is it! Not only are candied nuts very addicting but they go very fast at any celebration.
We found this recipe on Brown Eyed Baker blog. They used pecans but we substituted walnuts, we will be trying almonds too. We suggest doubling or tripling this recipe – ours were gone before we went to our get-together.
1 cup sugar
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp salt
2 egg whites
2 tbls water
½ tsp vanilla extract
1 lb walnut halves
Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Use a non-stick baking sheet with sides. You can also line your baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a gallon size Ziploc bag, add sugar, cinnamon and salt, then set aside.
In medium bowl, whisk together the 2 egg whites, water and vanilla extract together. Once completely mixed add walnuts to the bowl and stir them into the egg white mixture be sure they are all moistened.
Use a slotted spoon to remove the walnuts from the egg whites and put them into the cinnamon-sugar mixture bag. Seal bag, and shake it coating all of the walnuts.
With a clean slotted spoon, remove your walnuts from bag and place onto the baking sheet in a single layer.
Bake for 1 hour, stirring them every 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and cool to room temperature. Once cooled put the walnuts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.

Roasted Chickpeas Recipe: This may be the first time that I have ever tried garbanzo beans. I read that these little roasted chickpeas were addicting and I think that may be an understatement. WOW!
I purchased 2 cans of garbanzo beans from Trader Joe’s and should have bought a case! This recipe is super easy, the only pain is shelling each and every bean. With that being said… they are worth it. Next time I will get my daughter and husband to help speed up the process.
Garbanzo beans (as many cans as you want)
Cheesy Hash Brown and Ham Soup Recipe: I was told this is the best soup that I have ever made. Shirley has been day dreaming about the cheesy hash brown soup that she use to eat back in the days when she was a waitress at Perkins.
Trying to find a recipe that sounded similar to the one she explained was hard. Everything I found called for cans of soup (cream of celery and cream of chicken). When I make homemade soup I don’t like to add cans of soup in my recipes (other than chicken stock.)
I made up my own recipe and she said it is exactly what she remembered.
2 cups fully cooked ham cubed
1 medium onion diced
5 stalks of celery diced
5 cups frozen hash browns
48oz chicken stock
1lb Velveeta cheese cubed
1 1/2 cups milk
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup flour

IKEA Spice Rack Hack: We love a good organizing project. So, when my sister called to tell me she was converting an IKEA Spice Rack into a bathroom organizer, I told her to take pictures.
Seems pretty cheap and easy! You can purchase the BEKVAM Spice Rack at IKEA for $3.99. It is solid wood so you can sand it and paint or stain it any color you desire. (Depth: 3 7/8 ” Height: 3 1/2 ” Width: 15 3/4 “.)
Lisa wanted to be rid of the clutter of products on her bathroom sink and this turned out to be a great solution. The spice rack took only a few minutes to assemble. She applied spray paint and hung the racks when they were dry. Seriously, it was that simple.
Thanks to my creative sister for sharing her IKEA hack with us. We like that idea so much we’re going to take on this quick and easy project too!
Do you have an IKEA hack you think we should try? Leave us a comment below and we will check it out.
White House Black Market Sale: Today we had such a great time shopping (playing dress-up) at White House Black Market in Woodbury, MN. The best part was our salesperson Jen, she was so much fun!
We were invited over to the ‘Friends & Family’ sale: 25% off your entire purchase (use code 14091) – You can shop in boutiques and online today Tuesday, Nov. 11 – Sunday, Nov. 16. This sale is on top of the other sales they have going on, so it really is quite a big savings.
Shirley is what I would call conservative when it comes to clothes and walking into WHBM was a bit overwhelming to her. Jen immediately started putting outfits together for her and filling a dressing room. What a blast it was to watch Shirley try on things she would never dream of wearing. AND, she even bought a cute outfit!
If you have any holiday parties coming up be sure to stop in or go to their website before the 16th and take advantage of the 25% off.
Thanks again to Jen at WHBM Woodbury Lakes boutique for taking such good care of us, we will be back soon!
Easy to Crochet Mittens Video: Easy? Maybe if you have made mittens in the past or have experience in crocheting. However, I stuck with it and now have a new pair of mittens.
This was the easiest how-to video I could find on YouTube. In the video she was uses a heavier yarn, I would for sure do so next time. I only had medium weight yarn and didn’t want to make a 4am run to my local Walmart. I consider these my practice mittens.
Supplies that you will need to complete your mittens: Yarn of your choice, I hook 9-5.50mm, tape measure, scissors and a yarn needle.
No worries if you think you have done something wrong, don’t be afraid to pull it apart and hit rewind. I pulled apart my mittens a few times, so don’t give up! I paused the video through every step.
If you decided to give this mitten pattern a try, we would love to see your finished product. Add a photo to our Facebook page and show off your talents!
What should I make next? I have tried Infinity Scarfs, Boot Cuffs and a Hat. Please leave your ideas in the comment section below.
Venison Jerky Recipe: It’s deer hunting season again and if you are like my house, you still have some venison from last season. We decided to make jerky with our roasts in order to make room for fresh venison.
1 Tbs. Salt
1 Tbs. Onion Powder
1 Tbs. Garlic Powder
1 Tsp. Pepper
1/2 Tsp. Cayenne Pepper
1 Tbs. Worcestershire Sauce
1/4 Cup Teriyaki Sauce
3-4 Lb. Venison Roast
Slice the roast into 1/8″ – 1/4″ thick slices with the grain. Mix all dry ingredients together and then add your wet ingredients; mix thoroughly. Place your slices of venison in the marinade; covering completely. Refrigerate overnight.
Dehydrate the venison for 6-7 hours. I rotated trays every 1 1/2 – 2 hours.
Dehydrate until tenderness is to your liking. Note: Jerky will seem to be more dry over time after dehydration. So what one would think is too tender or underdone could be just right over 1 hour or 2 after.
Do you dehydrate your venison? Share your recipe with us in the comments below.
